The Argyle district, is often referred to as East London or “far” East London by the residents who live here. The Argyle district is bordered by Veterans Memorial Parkway to the east, Oxford Street to the north, Highbury Ave. and Pottersburg Creek (Kiwanis Park) to the west and the CN train tracks to the south. Approximately 28,000 people live in the established neighbourhoods of Argyle which include: Bonaventure Meadows, Marconi, Pottersburg and Trafalgar Heights. The northern part of Argyle, which includes the London Psychiatric Hospital lands, lands was annexed by the City in 1912 with the remainder annexed in 1961.
Argyle Mall, located on the southeast corner of Dundas St. and Clark Rd., serves as the centre hub of the neighbourhood and is in the early planning stages of renovations. Commercial developments have expanded along Dundas St. and a Business Improvement Association is establishing itself in the area. Argyle is characterised by a large number of schools, churches, cultural clubs, as well as home to the Argyle double-pad Arena and East Lions Artisans Centre on Wavell St. There are plans underway to construct an indoor pool, community centre and gymnasium in Argyle in 2018. The London Psychiatric Hospital Lands are currently being planned for a neighbourhood development. The Salvation Army Children’s Village is also located in Argyle at the northeast corner of Highbury Ave. and Dundas St. and the East London Library, YMCA and Argyle Neighbourhood Resource Centre are located on Dundas St. just east of Clark Rd. Clarke Road Secondary School, Bonaventure Meadows Public School, F. D. Roosevelt Public School, John P. Robarts Public School, Lord Nelson Public School, Prince Charles Public School, Princess Anne French Immersion Public School, Sir Winston Churchill Public School, Holy Family Separate School, St. Pius X Separate School and St. Robert Separate School are all found in this district.
